FAQ

How do I know if my child would benefit from therapy?

Many families reach out because something in daily life feels harder than expected — regulation, transitions, communication, play, or routines.

A free consultation is often the best first step. It allows us to listen, learn about your concerns, and help you decide whether therapy feels supportive at this time.

What is your approach to therapy?

Our approach is play-based, relationship-centered, and regulation-first.

We are informed by DIR/Floortime principles and view development as a whole-body, whole-child process. Therapy focuses on emotional safety, connection, and readiness — recognizing that meaningful growth happens within relationships.

What does a typical therapy session look like?

Sessions are child-led, semi structured/structured, grounded in play and interaction.

Activities may include movement, sensory exploration, imaginative play, and functional routines — all thoughtfully chosen to support regulation, connection, and participation. There is no expectation for children to “perform” during sessions.

Do parents participate in sessions?

Parent involvement varies depending on the child’s needs and the service provided.

We value collaboration and often include parents in sessions, observation, or coaching. Together, we decide what feels most supportive for each child and family.

How long does therapy last?

Therapy duration varies based on the child’s needs, goals, and readiness.

We regularly reflect with families to ensure therapy continues to feel meaningful, supportive, and aligned with the child’s development.

What if my child has a hard day?

That’s okay — and very common.

Hard days often provide valuable information about a child’s regulation and needs. We meet children where they are and adjust sessions accordingly.

Do I need a Prescription / Referral before my first session of occupational and speech therapy?

Yes, to evaluate and treat clients in Illinois State, Occupational Therapists and Speech Therapists are required to obtain a valid prescription/referral.

A valid prescription/referral for Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy is one made by a physician/pediatrician.

What type of health insurance do you accept?

KidsConnect is in-network for Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO and United Healthcare. We are an out-of-network provider with all the other medical plans.

As a courtesy, before treatment begins we assist with checking your benefits, however is the full parent responsibility to check their insurance benefits. Some insurance plans require prior authorization before treatment begins which is our responsibility to ask for.

KidsConnect will bill your insurance company for services performed. Co-payments, deductible and co-insurance amounts are due at the time of service or next day. We will invoice you if your insurance plan will not cover payment. Private pay plans are also an option. KidsConnect accepts cash, Visa, and Mastercard.

Please note, that according to all insurance companies, authorization is not always a guarantee of payment so unpaid balance will be your responsibility.

How do I know what/if my insurance company will reimburse me if I’m out of network?

On the back of your insurance card, there is a customer service number you will want to call your insurance company to speak to them directly.  Tell them you are seeking occupational therapy services from an out-of-network provider.

Some of the questions you may need to ask them are:

  • Do they reimburse for out-of-network occupational therapy services?

  • What are their policies regarding out-of-network reimbursement?

  • What is their reimbursement rate?

  • Do they require additional paperwork for reimbursement?

Please note that companies and policies vary a lot in their reimbursement practices. Some companies will pick up a percentage of the bill immediately, and others may require your deductible to be met before picking up a percentage.
